Born and raised in Hawai’i, Matthew and Roxy Ortiz are a husband and wife art duo who collaborate under the name Wooden Wave. They are known for creating imaginative tree houses designed with underlying themes of sustainability and environmental awareness.
OluKai commissioned Wooden Wave to create a Limited Edition 11x17 print for Flip Flop Shops that represented OluKai’s Hawaiian roots and the balance of the importance of Mauka and Makai.
This piece is entitled, "Kīkahakaʻiwa" and shows ʻiwa (seabirds) returning to land at sunset. For ancient Hawaiian navigators, seabirds were an important indicator that land was near; their flight paths pointed the way home. This scene takes place at sunset, a crucial time of the day when navigators re-calibrated their course based off of the position of the sinking sun. This lesson applies to more than ocean-bound navigation. It is also a reminder that regardless of where you are in the world, each day's end can be a time for reflecting on our life's course and planning for the next day's journey.”
These prints will only be available at Flip Flop Shops through March so make sure to get into a shop before they are gone.
